Decarbonizing
the Greek comprehensive ports

sustainable transportzero-emission gateways

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

DECOMPRES is a national initiative co-funded by the EU’s CEF Transport Programme, aiming to transform four TEN-T comprehensive ports in Greece — Rafina, Lavrion, Corfu, and Kavala — into modern, low-emission hubs through the deployment of shore-side electricity (SSE) infrastructure. The total budget amounts to €9.67M, with 85% EU co-financing via the Cohesion Fund. The clean technology of SSE allows vessels to shut down their engines and plug into onshore power while docked, cutting harmful emissions and improving air quality in port cities.

Partners

We transform four TEN-T comprehensive ports in Greece — Rafina, Lavrion, Corfu, and Kavala — into modern, low-emission hubs through the deployment of shore-side electricity (SSE) infrastructure.

Project outputs

As one of the first large-scale SSE rollouts in Greece, DECOMPRES sets a new standard for sustainable port development. Its goal is not only to build and design infrastructure but also to create a roadmap for wider adoption across Greece and Mediterranean.

For the first time in Greece, ports of different typologies and geographies — island (Corfu), mainland (Lavrio, Kavala), and high-volume passenger (Rafina) — join forces under a single decarbonisation strategy. The project, coordinated by Lavrio Port Authority and supported by public and private stakeholders (including HEDNO, PROTASIS, HYDRUS, WMG, NTUA, GROWTHFUND), establishes a model of national collaboration for sustainable infrastructure development.
